Description: This Teac Deck was made in the good old days for quality and was among of the top of the line models. It is made ruggedly and features a 4 head 3 motor transport with autoreverse function - so it will play in both directions without the need to turn the tape over. Transport and electronics in this machine are actually 2 separate chassis with 2 separate model numbers. The Amplifer electronics module is model number: AR-40S. This machine is in perfect working condition and was completely overhauled fo ryears of trouble free service. Both pinch roller and main capstan belt were recently replaced.

MUSIC on Open Reel Tape that would go well with these Recorders!

Condition: Excellent working condition - machine recently completely overhauled. The pinch roller and the main drive belt ar ein excelent conditon (recently replace) work included: a complete cleaning and lubrication job on all mechanical parts - which inclcuded rework for the common "pichroller assembly stuck" problem; All potentiometers and swtiched deoxydized and lubricated, electroic calibrations checked and tweaked. The heads of this machine show some wear (it is almost impossible to find a deck without head wear these days), but they are worn very even (previous owner did an excellent maintenance job) so the heads perform flawless! A great machine with a great life expectancy fo ryears of trouble free service! Physical Condition: (Very Clean, but the wooden case has a few minor dings - it probalby was moved sevweral times. The playback level control knob at it's outer ring has a piece broken off. The plexiglass dust cover has a piece broken out (not directly visible), Otther than that: the machine has no scratches or damages, - and if it was not for the mentioned items, this machine would be perfect!

Description: The SONY TC-378 is a open reel tape deck with rather rare features: 3 head design while providing the rare 1 7/8" speed. The perfect machine for tape transfer projects, for analog recording, or to listen to old tapes. This deck was refurbished with a thorough job and performs like when it was new. It's ferite / ferite hgeads, show virtually no wear and perform flawlessly. The machine is offered here in great and reliably working condition! This unit offers RCA jacks, but also provides a European DIN jack to integrate with other audio equipment. The unit can be configured to work worldwide on different voltages by means of a selector switch. The TC-378 open reel deck can be used in Stereo or in Dual Mono mode. This machine is built well with quality material choices, built heavey duty and reliable to last for many decades! All mechanical parts are metal and plastic is used quite sparingly. Condition: This machine probalby was used only moderatewly andappears to have been storredmost of the time resulting in all mechanical and parts that usually wear (and are worn on machines of simmilar age!) to be in great conditon. A lot of work went into this machine never the less, to provide a great and reliably workign piece of gear. WORK
PERFORMED to recondtion this unit: ELECTRONICS: All controls, contacts and switcheds were deoxydized and lubricated. Electrononic (levles, bias, etc.) and mechanical adjustment were erformed. MECHANICS: All mechanincal parts have been checked and reworked where needed: remove old lubrication and re-lubricate, all mechnical parts were lubricated, springs tensioned.
The heads of this machine are in perfect condition and recording and playback are stable and rock solid! High frequnecies are well reproduced and recorded. This machine was throroughly tested, tweaked and performs reliably! The machine is in perfect mechanic and electronic condition, PHYSICAL condition: minor signs of age and use, such as light scratches, ehich can be only detected upon close inspection. There are no disturbing scratches on the face plate etc. The outer transparent plastic cover (not shown) of this unit is not perfect and has several imperfections, such as cracks, break outs and cracks. Otherwise this machine is clean and looks great!

Open reel tape is most common in 1/4" or 1/2" width and can be recorded in various different recording formats. The basiscs are: the more room for the audio material physically on the etape, the better it sounds. This can be achieved by recording speed and track width - in other words how much space a track takes form the width of a tape. The more material can be squeezed onto a tape the longer it will play, but will result in lower quality recordings. Proffessional machines thus record at 15 or 38 IPS in half track or ful track format, where consumer machines most often record in quater track format at 3 3/4 or 7 1/2 IPS. Recordings can be made in mono on one of the availalbe track, or in stereo, where stereo recordings usually cut the availalbe recording time in half, as 2 tracks are recorded at the same time. It is also important to consider what maximum reel size a deck can work with. Higher speed professional machines can often accept 10 1/2" reel sizes, while consumer decks are often limited to 7" reel sizes.

How much material can a 7" Tape reel hold?

Depending on recording speed and track usage open reel tapes can hold vastly varying amounts of material. If recorded at 15 IPS and in stereo and in half track format can hold about 22 minutes of material, OR (!) if recorded at 1 7/8 IPS in mono and in quarter track format and recorded on all 4 tracks, can provide 12 hours of audio material! The average user however records their tapes in stereo quarter track format , and in either 3 3/4 or 7 1/2 IPS. This translates to 45 Minutes for 7 1/2 IPS, or 90 Min. for 3 3/4 IPS Per SIDE (!). Here all of the details again: One 7" Open Reel Tape contains about 1800' of tape and will play in stereo: 45 Minutes @ 7 1/2 IPS, 90 Min. @ 3 3/4 IPS or 180 Minutes @ 1 7/8 IPS, PER SIDE (!) - so double the time if recorded double sided; AND: if recorded in mono: (as there are 2 tracks per side for quater track width) double the time AGAIN!.

Work performed on this deck: All belts were replaced. All electrolytic capacitors were replaced (Old original parts that were pulled included!). All controls and switches were deoxydized, re-soldered aged solder joints; Heads. pinch roller and elements in tape path were cleaned and de-magnetized; The complete meachinsm was carefully inspected, re-lubricated and re-worked to perform properly. Physical cleaning and detail work. The machine plays and records very well. If I woudl charge for the work that went into this deck it woudl be about a $175 job.

Channel Master portable Open Reel Tape Deck

Description: Transfer or listen to your old vintage tapes recorded decades ago! Get into vintage sound recordings, or get into "Lo-Fi" recording. This deck comes form a time when everything was cared for with great detail. Transistors were a novelty at the time when this deck was made and the cassette tape had not been popular yet. The unit operates with 6 vintage Germanium transistors. This is a complete set: the deck, the original compatible Mic , and a custom made AC power supply.

Features: 2 Speeds: 1 7/8" and 3 3/4 (Changed via inserting the inclucded pitch conversion sleeve). 1/2 track recording format. Runs on Batteries (6 "D" cells) and has connector for external 9V power supply (included). Tape length indicator on the top cover. Operation elements (see picture - left to right): Level indicator for battery , power and recording level. input / output terminal: Remote, Mic in, Radio / Line Aux in, Ext speaker / monitor out. Condition: Physical: Very Clean, some signs of use:(fien scratches, etc.). Other than that: really nice condition - only few minor scratches. ELECTRONIC / WORKING: In order to present this machine in it's current condition I did a repair / refurb job on this deck. The heads of this machine appear to not have had much wear and are in excelelnt condition.

Work performed on this deck: The main belt was replaced. All other rubber parts were cleaned and treated. The complete meachinsm was carefully inspected, re-lubricated and re-worked to perform properly. All mechnical parts were lubricated. All controls and switches were deoxydized, Physical cleaning and detail work. In order to optimize sound quality and proper operation with the incluuded AC power supply I modified the electronics by inserting a voltage regulator into the power circuit of this deck. The machine plays and records very well. If I would charge for the work that went into this deck it woudl be about a $155 job.

Tape Splicer for Cassette + (possibly) Open Reel Recording Tape

Description: This Tape Splicer is New Old Stock in original unopened packaking. It was manufactured in the USA for Radio Shack and. It is designated to be used for audio cassette tapes, but the tape slot on this trimmer is the same construction and width for open reel tape and when the white insert is removed / tunred over it may work for open reel tape. (I have a splicer for open reel tape of the exact same construction and the difference is the insert, which can be removed / tunred over. - So likelty this will work or can be modified to work for open reel tape.) Repair or splice old trecording ape. This splicer cuts and trimms with 2 different sections to cut tape to join it together, or to trim in parallel to the recording tape - to trim eccess splicing tape. Box contence: Tape splicer in unopened original box with instructions on back and a roll of splicing tape installed.

Condition: Vintage, as shown: packing slight signs of age - excellent. All print is well readable - nice condition), but iten new in unopnened condition. Desinged to work for audio cassette tapes, but may work for open reel tape if modified. (Detail see above)

Tape Head Demagnetizing Coils
(Original vintage!)

These vintage tap head demagnetizers are for all equipment that uses magnetic recordign media. The playing of magnetized tape amgnetizes heads over time and results in loss of high frequencies and hiss. Magnetized heads can also partially erase some apscts of the original recoding and thus may damage vintage recording. Professionls use head demagnetizers about every 10 play hours to main tain full interity of their equipment. Here is the needed tool - vintage all original from the good old days of analof recordings!

The item to the left (#1) was made in the USA likely in the 50's or 60's. The tiem to tthe right is labeled: "AudioTex" Hi-Fi accessories - Head Demagnetizer likely made in the late 60's / early 70's.

For those of you who do not wish to buy a whole reel to reel deck just to listen to or transfer transfer a few tapes: I offer professional reel to reel / open tape reel to CD / digital transfer services. Cut your tapes to CD, or even get e-mailable MP3 files of your material. I publish my own music comercially and have a full featured recording studio based on a Digidesign ProTools System and various reel to reel decks. I can handle 15, 7 1/2, 3 3/4, 1 7/8 IPS recording speeds and full track, half track, quarter track and 4 track / 4 chanel recording formats

My work aimes for highest quality. I charge: - by the hour, - by a special dicount rate per day, if your project takes more than a day of work time, - at a further discounted rate, if your project takes more than 3 days.
I also sell refurbished quality reel to reel decks.

I offer transfer, restoration, enhancement and post processing services. I process orders only under the agreemnt, that you are in possession of all legal licenses to copy copyrighted materials and that you take full responsibility for any claims that may arise from potential copy right violations.

• What does it take transfer Reel to Reel tape to CD or MP3?

As tape reels vary in sizes and can be recorded in various diferent formats and recording speeds, a definte estimate can only be given when all details in regards to formats and the recorded material a tape contains, are known (Detail below).
The time required to transfer depends entirely on: the format and the quality of your recordigns, and on the quality of the desired final product. (More DETAIL below!)

Rule of thumb: If wishing to receive CD’s (or MP3’s) where each tune / piece from a tape can be accessed as a separate track on a CD, an average work/transfer time double of the material length (or: play time can) be expected. In other words: Required transfer work time averages aproximately double the PLAY TIME of the material recorded on your tapes.

• How do I estimate PLAY TIME (or material length) of my open reel tapes?

Guideline: One 7" Open Reel Tape contains about 1800' of tape and will play in stereo: 45 Minutes @ 7 1/2 IPS, 90 Min. @ 3 3/4 IPS or 180 Minutes @ 1 7/8 IPS, PER SIDE (!) - so double the time if recorded double sided; AND: if recorded in mono: (as there are 2 tracks per side for quater track width) double the time AGAIN!.

Assuming that the recordings on a tape are of reasonable quality, that the tape is in reasonably good physical condtion and that it is desired that each tune is to be accessible as a separate track on the final CD: it takes in the average about twice as much time than the material's playtime, to properly record and master

These factors likely may reduce required time to process:
- Recording in one swoop without any interruption - (drawback: output CD will have only 1 accessible track on it)
- Tapes recorded at highest speeds
- Recordings of excellent quality and that are:
- propperly separated with silence between each tune / piece
- Tapes in perfect physical condition
- Tapes that have little material on them or have few separate tuens / pieces requiring no- or little separation.

These factors will add to the required time to process:

- different recording levels or different tonal qualities on the same tape, (tape was recorded on different machines, or at different times, or have great variation of material on the tape)
- sound quality poor or varies (may add considerably to the time it takes to process, as each change requires time to readjust processing).
- Poor quality recordings (set-up time for equalisation / resotration and post processing)
- Tunes merge into each other; talk over the beginning or ending of materials etc.
- Poor quality tape materials: aged tapes that are brittle, have loose tape partices, are torn, have wrinkles, are tearing apart easily, or a chemically contaminated, were storred in poor environments, etc.

Tape formats:
- 1/4” or 1/2” width
- Reel size: 3”, 5”, 7” 10”
- Recording format: stereo or mono tracks (or multi track);
- track fromat / track width: quarter track, half track, full track, (or special asigned, such as staggered, multi track, etc.)
- Recording Speed Info (Speeds: 1 7/8, 3 3/4, 7 1/5, 15, 38 IPS)
- Physical condition of the tapes(s)
- Material on the tape.

A suitable Reel to Reel Tape Deck in great working condition (there are many formats and tape sizes - see above!), Possibly analog processing equipment, and digital recording equipment that ideally would have processng capabilities and outputs to standard audio CDs (MP3’s).
